THE 12TH ISTANBUL BIENNIAL

The visual identity and the title of the 12th Istanbul Biennial—Untitled (12th Istanbul Biennial), 2011—reference the work of the Cuban American artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres (1957–1996), one of the most important artists of the contemporary era.

The five group exhibitions of the 12th Istanbul Biennial are titled Untitled (Abstraction), “Untitled” (Ross), “Untitled” (Passport), Untitled (History), and “Untitled” (Death by Gun). Each departs from a specific work by Felix Gonzalez-Torres. More than 50 solo presentations carry further the discussions broached by the group exhibitions.

4th Moscow Biennale of Contemporary Art

The title for the Biennale, “Rewriting Worlds”, proclaims that art is a sphere where new things are unceasingly generated, and contemporary artists rewrite the world as it exists around them by conveying new ideas and viewpoints in their artistic work. Peter Weibel believes that the exhibition’s main goal is “to demonstrate different levels of artistic thought — technological, political and psychological.”

The main project will be located at two venues — the ARTPLAY Design Center, and the TSUM Art Foundation, both in central Moscow. There will also be 6 special guests, as well as 69 special projects and parallel programs at different venues. In addition, the Biennale expands its geographic boundaries beyond Moscow, with special projects planned in Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Kiev, and London.

Car Fetish presents the automobile as a source of inspiration for the art of the last hundred years. Starting with the Futurists, who saw in its beastly roar and thrilling, dangerous speed a new ideal of beauty, the book provides an overview of the most beautiful and inspiring artworks we owe to this tin muse. Among them are examples of Pop Art and creations by the Nouveaux Réalistes, with Jean Tinguely as biggest Formula 1 fan. The extensive catalog places the automobile in the context of cultural history as a key cultural artifact of the twentieth century.

The first work to be exhibited in the series Modern Essays at SALT is Ahmet Öğüt’s Across the Slope. Originally shown in 2008 at Centre d’Art Santa Mònica in Barcelona, the installation consists of a modified Fiat 131 Mirafiori balanced precariously across a slope that takes over the floor of the gallery space.

The Fiat 131 Mirafiori was the dream car of the 1970s middle class in Turkey. In addition to domestic production, the 131 was manufactured in Turkey’s Tofaş factory as Murat 131, in Spain as Seat 131 and in Soviet Russia as Lada. It was also assembled in Southeast Asia, South America and North Africa. While Mirafiori’s design and engine were imported to these foreign markets, its assembly was local. The classic middle class car of its era, today Mirafiori remains a symbol of modernization, and an early example of a developing culture around custom-made cars. Öğüt’s version of the 131, like the American automobiles of the 1950s, is elongated beyond the needs of luxury.

Is this car on the slope just a modified Murat 131, or is it a middle class dream, suspended in mid-air?

An earlier work by artist Vahit Tuna titled The President’s Car (1998) tackled issues that arose from the transformation of the luxurious American cars imported to Turkey during the Democrat Party era. These cars that were used first by wealthy families, later became taxicabs and, finally, were modified in Dolapdere as eight-person shuttle buses. Ironically, these local articulations were visually reminiscent of limousines.

A comparison between American brands like Dodge or Chevrolet and Mirafiori embodies not only a Euro-American duality, but also the contrasting fantasies of the American and European middle classes. The helplessness of the working class eluded to in Öğüt’s Across the Slope can also be perceived in the composite photograph series Hip Activities-Escorts (2003-2005) by Aydan Murtezaoğlu. The car in Murtezaoğlu’s photographs is a 1968 Opel Rekord, manufactured the year of worldwide protests that represented the first great disappointment of the middle class after World War II.

In the 1960s, Turkish engineers produced the Devrim [Revolution], a prototype hand-made car. Öğüt first explored the Devrim in Today in History (2007), a series of stories and illustrations based on Turkish newspaper texts. Öğüt’s interest in the Devrim stemmed from the historic failure of its inaugural test-drive, the embarrassing result of an empty gas tank. Like the Devrim project, Across the Slope references the competitive spirit of national pride projects, as well as the invisible obstructions that middle class aspirations stumbled upon. It provides an alternative vantage point from which to deconstruct Turkish history.

Across the Slope can also be viewed as an extension of Öğüt’s Ground Control (2008), featured in the 5th Berlin Biennial, in which he covered a 400 sq. m. exhibition space with asphalt. Creating a chain of associations - including the demand for gas, asphalt’s origins in Southeastern Turkey, the country’s position as a cheap production base for the rest of the world, the dependency inherent to Turkey’s industrialization, the development of the autobahn, tire production and the assemblage industry - Öğüt’s work shapes a dialogue that touches on political, as well as economic issues.

Across the Slope will be accompanied by a video program exploring alternative readings of the work, to be presented in SALT Beyoğlu’s Walk-in Cinema.

For our second project in Venice, we are presenting Commercial Break from 1 to 5 June 2011 as part of the opening week of the 54th Venice Biennale.

Commercial Break is a conspicuous intervention into the historic city of Venice, featuring over one hundred artists, each engaging with the relationship between advertising and culture. Short digital works by globally recognized and emerging artists from around the world will bring the form and language of advertising to Venice. The project is curated by Neville Wakefield and powered by POST magazine. Commercial Break is both an intervention with the architecture of the city and an iPad application created by POST, the world’s first magazine created specifically for the iPad. The special art issue will allow readers to explore individual artists and films for the 5 months of the Biennale as well as on location in Venice.

With a keenly perceptive and sharp wit, Ahmet Öğüt examines everyday happenstance, modes of behaviour and informal gestures which bear witness to broader global social and political structures. Through diverse means of expression, from installation and performance to drawing, video and interventions in public space, Öğüt weaves loose narratives that meander between artistic practice and social life to provoke critical consciousness and subtle shifts in perspective.

In Once upon a time a clock-watcher during overtime hours, Öğüt's solo exhibition at the Fondazione Giuliani, the artist moves his practice in a new direction, using an art collection as source material. Öğüt has selected works by Marina Abramovic, Giovanni Anselmo, Carl Andre, Mircea Cantor, Peter Coffin, Cyprien Gaillard, Joseph Kosuth and Sislej Xhafa from the Giuliani Collection to create "atmospheres" or interventions around each work which call attention to the characteristics of the works themselves, while also appropriating them to create multi-layered narratives with an open trajectory to generate and expand upon new meanings. Underlining these interventions is the consideration that no artwork has one single reading but is open to subjective interpretation. While paying homage to the works by these artists, Öğüt questions authorial originality and intentionality. He creates visual texts, which invite the viewer to really ponder a work of art while formulating new considerations and multiple readings.

Interspersed throughout the exhibition spaces are a body of artworks by the artist himself, several of which have been produced specifically for the show. These works underscore Öğüt's continuing interest in time, sociological structures and mechanisms of surveillance and control. The 16mm film collage, Wikipolis, juxtaposes a scene from Metropolis, Fritz Lang's seminal 1927 film on urban dystopia, with an image of a former nuclear bunker in Stockholm that now houses a data centre with 8,000 computer servers, two of which belong to WikiLeaks. The interactive installation, River Crossing Puzzle, transforms a traditional children's puzzle into a playful but politically charged game, while with My Spy Desk, the exhibition's viewers become unintentional protagonists. Ultimately, Once upon a time a clock-watcher during overtime hoursinvites the viewer to bear witness to and participate in an exercise of irony, nuance and layered interpretation.

Born in Diyarbakir, Turkey in 1981, Öğüt currently resides in Amsterdam. Winner of the Volkskrant Art Prize 2011, Öğüt's recent solo exhibitions include Stones to Throw, Kunsthalle Lissabon, Lisbon; Underestimated Zones, Laumeier Sculpture Park, St. Louis; Ricochet # 4, Museum Villa Stuck, Munich; Speculative Social Fantasies, Artspace Visual Arts Centre in Sydney; Things we count, Künstlerhaus Bremen; Mutual Issues, Inventive Acts, Kunsthalle Basel; Across the Slope, Centre d'Art Santa Monica, Barcelona. Selected group exhibitions include Performa 09, New York; 5th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art; 9th International Istanbul Biennial. In 2009 he co-represented Turkey at the 53rd Venice Biennale together with Banu Cennetoğlu.

Kunsthalle Lissabon is proud to present Stones to throw, Ahmet Öğüt's first solo show in Portugal. In Stones to throw, an installation specifically developed for Kunsthalle Lissabon, Öğüt departs from nose art, the decorative paintings or designs on the fuselage of military aircrafts, which can be seen as a form of aircraft graffiti, to present a series of 10 painted stones that feature the same kind of designs seen in airplanes. Throughout the exhibition, and gradually, all of the stones, except the last one, will be removed from Kunsthalle Lissabon's exhibition space and sent to Diyarbakir, Öğüt's hometown. The stones will then be received by a friend of the artist and left abandoned on the streets. All the process of removing the stones from the exhibition and abandoning them on the city will be documented and presented in Kunsthalle Lissabon as part of the artist's installation. Diyarbakir, located in southeast Turkey has been witnessing an increase of children arrested on charges of stone throwing.

The exhibition will also include older works such as Somebody else's car (2005), Short circuit (2006) and This area is under 23 hour video and audio surveillance (2009).

“ECHT?” is the first exhibition curated by the new artistic director of Künstlerhaus Stuttgart, Adnan Yıldız. It presents instances of artistic research influenced by the perception of fictionalised reality and investigates how self-reflexivity operates in artistic production. An artist talk with Ming Wong, a workshop with Ruti Sela & Maayan Amir and two floors of installations connected via a poster link by Slavs and Tatars to the city centre turn the exhibition into a stage for questioning new forms of artistic reality and critical imagination.

A poster installation by Slavs and Tatars can be seen during the exhibition at Kulturplatz, Klett-Passage of Hauptbahnhof Stuttgart.

PIECE FOUND, DIAMOND CLAIMED! For Ahmet Öğüt's work titled "Black Diamond", a small piece has been removed from a wall inside ARTER and buried in 9 tons of coal. If a viewer was successful in finding the institution piece, they were to return it to its original location, and claim the diamond that had been placed there. On Wednesday, 2 December, exactly at 18:36, Ümit Sarıgül ve Ahmet Can Bayrak found the institution piece and claimed the diamond!

Complicity is a micro-community alliance that operates on the periphery of established ordering systems. Its critical potential emerges from the multitude of subversive modi operandi in the grey zone of deceitful agreements. Artists, curators, critics, consumers… the vast number of possible positions complicates collectivity and multiplies the contradictions of complicity. Five facets of alternative artistic thinking and method inform the concept of Critical Complicity / Kritische Komplizenschaft: The transitions from macro to micro-community; the field of tension between legal/illegal; affect and seduction; the moment of interdependency; and the employment of tactical media. However, only the interconnection of these fields amongst each other can do justice to the complexity of critical complicity. Thus, what the participants in this exhibition have in common is the concern to deconstruct the singular.

Ahmet Ögüt’s solo exhibition taking place in the Stedelijk Museum Bureau Amsterdam. The exhibition, entitled ‘Informal Incidents’, comprises photographs, videos, an installation and an auction; the common denominator in all the works on display is the desire for a departure from the norm. By scheduling an auction at SMBA, which normally is a non-commercial institution, Ögüt aims at pushing our minds open to new possibilities.

The auction is an example of the artist’s celebration of actions performed in order to question social assumptions and the status quo. Ögüt praises acts like challenging the ordinary and exploring the gaps. His actions find expression in generally unspectacular but frequently disconcerting events, often recorded and transmitted to the public by use of documentary materials such as photography or video. However, by faking the action documented, Ögüt simultaneously questions the epistemological status of the documentary material: Can documentary material provide true accounts of fake actions?

The exhibition in SMBA is accompanied by the SMBA Newsletter No. 117 (NL/EN) featuring an essay written by Moosje Goosen.

From 4 July 2010 visitors can discover happiness in the Van Abbemuseum. Ahmet Öğüt (1981, Diyarbakir, Turkey) has then filled the entire space of Het Oog (The Eye) with twelve tonnes of coal and has buried a little piece of the museum in the mountains he created. This "museum piece" has been removed from a wall inside the museum and is there replaced by a valuable diamond. If the “museum piece” is found by one of the quest visitors, this will lead to happiness, when the museum piece is placed back into the museum and the finder becomes the owner of the diamond.

Ahmet Öğüt is the third artist in the series of Het Oog and his work period lasts until December 2010. This time, the working period does not involve the continued presence of the artist and his activities, but rather the presence of the public.

Öğüt gives visitors the chance to be part of the construction and understanding of his work by opening Het Oog for a special quest to discover happiness.

For all the visitors there will be an alternative treasure map that is displayed in a vitrine inside the museum. Via cryptic directions and binoculars visitors are invited to wander around the museum and have a chance to see the diamond.

On Sunday, July 4, 2010, from 2 pm the quest will begin in Het Oog with the opening of Ahmet Öğüt's work. The first entries are then possible and interested parties will begin their search.

To participate in the quest visitors need to register at the information desk by phone (+31 (0)40-2381098) or at the counter itself. Four people per day are allowed up to 1.5 hours each as they try to find the piece of the museum and the diamond in and around Het Oog.

Het Oog

Het Oog (The Eye) is an area in the Van Abbemuseum that offers a stage to artists to create new work during a working period of six months. Het Oog is a special location in the ‘open-air’ of the museum where artists conduct a specific work on the spot.

‘Guppy 13 vs Ocean Wave, a Bas Jan Ader experience’ is a comment on the legendary and fatal project of the artist and adventurer Bas Jan Ader. In 1975 Ader, aged 33, attempted to cross the ocean as an art project, to never return again.

Ahmet Öğüt has found a replica in Illinois, USA and shipped it to Amsterdam-Noord. He invites and challenges you to take a solo sail across the IJ from de Tolhuistuin to Central Station on the 28th, 29th and 30th of May.

In an exhibition, visitors are accustomed to watching, listening and observing art alone and with others. But what happens when the role of an observer becomes more active? What kind of an event is a set-up?

Just like contemporary art itself, the 11th collection exhibition of the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma is open-mindedly crossing all kinds of borders. The leading role is given to the artist as well as to the viewer. It’s a Set-up is about the experiential and participatory aspect of art, and considers such themes as time and duration, the presentation and staging of artwork, performance and human relationships. The exhibition showcases various works and techniques from 41 artists. Some of the works encourage the viewer to use other senses than those of sight and hearing and attempt to enhance the viewer’s experience of the artwork.

With Exploded City, Ahmet Öğüt envisions an imaginary metropolis comprising buildings, monuments, and vehicles that have figured in acts of violence and terrorism over the past two decades. Structures from Turkey, Ireland, India, Yugoslavia, Great Britain, and the United States, among other countries, form a unified urban scale model, reconstructing these sites in the moments before they were destroyed. The installation, originally commissioned for the Turkish Pavilion at the 2009 Venice Biennale, is accompanied by a text situating the included locations within a Calvinoesque narrative that engages the poetics and politics of space, architecture, violence, and international relations. Paraphrasing Calvino’s Invisible Cities, Öğüt presents visible but “semi-anonymous” buildings, whose intact form may be forgotten while the aftermaths of their destruction are seared into the collective consciousness via the media and individual consciousnesses via personal experience. The collapsing of time and distance in this collection of models is echoed by the vehicles—also used in terrorism, but referencing as well Öğüt’s ongoing interest in distance, time, and speed, measures by which our relationship to reality is shaped and through which disparate lands are connected.

From this central installation, the exhibition expands to other works. The film Things We Count pans slowly across the retired fighter planes at an airplane graveyard in Arizona’s Sonoran desert, as a voice counts them one by one in Kurdish, Turkish, and English. This counting, in the languages of faraway lands, connects the planes in their U.S. resting place to their actions in the larger world.

Öğüt recently had solo exhibitions at Künstlerhaus Bremen; Centre d’Art Santa Mònica, Barcelona; and Kunsthalle Basel. His work was also recently included in group exhibitions at Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; De Appel, Amsterdam; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Malmö Konsthall, Sweden; Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven, the Netherlands; and the Berlin Biennale. This is the artist’s first solo exhibition in the United States. Born in Turkey in 1981, Öğüt lives and works in Amsterdam.

Pilvi Takala and Ahmet Ögüt, both currently living and working in Amsterdam, will talk about their practice.

Ahmet Ögüt works with a broad range of media including video, photography, installation, drawing and printed media. His work often borrows from the experience of everyday life, which he observes and then amplifies and alters to expose its many contradictions. He weaves reality and fiction, success and failure, human tragedies and comedies to explore the failings and gaps of political and social structures.

Pilvi Takala works with narrative forms such as video, artist books and performance. Her work is based on subtle interventions in specific social settings, such as a work place, a local cafe or shopping mall. By breaking the rules in a subtle but constructive way Takala's actions reveal, question and eventually reinvent shared truths.

Auto. Sueño y Materia is organized by CA2M Centro de Arte Dos de Mayo and Laboral Centro de Arte y Creación Industrial

Auto. Sueño y material, examines the influence of the car in contemporary art. With over one hundred works by sixty artists from Spain and further afield, the exhibition throws light on the relationship between car culture and art over recent decades. The vast majority of the works presented come from the last two decades but with a heavy accent on the current moment, a period in which the reading of the car from an art perspective took on such density and complexity as well as critical perspective and detached biting wit. The automobile has been, and indeed still is, one of the most effective media for the material embodiment of dreams. And now, artists are questioning the reality of those dreams.

On Oct. 3 the Museum launches its feature project - "Warszawa w budowie" - "Warsaw under construction", a trailer of a new festival focused on designing. The trigger for this event was the City of Warsaw's request to have a new design festival. The Museum proposed to debate it's formula - is bringing beautiful objects into an ugly city worth the effort. Shouldn't we discuss the quality of the urban space instead? During the forthcoming two months of exbibitions and talks the Museum is looking for answers, how to redesign the public space in Warsaw in order to make it better.

The EXHIBITION presented at the Museum’s temporary HQ and in the neighbouring locations (the pedestrian passage in front of it, the Honorary Tribune on the Defilad Sq. and inside the Palace of Culture) comprises of works by artists, who relate their practice to design and urban planning and who borrow from their languages. They offer no solutions, do not yield to the demand for functionality. Instead, they bring into focus the particularities of Central-European urban space. The key-words to that world are: temporariness, decay, non-durability, anarchy, the validity of urban utopias. Where complex solutions are bound to fail, makeshift replaces designing and becomes an alternative way of satisfying needs. Temporariness, remaining half-way characterizes Warsaw just as other metropolises of the dynamically developing regions – Asia, Middle East or Latin America.

Öğüt grounds his work on the fact that there are 203 licensed football players named 'Mehmet Yıldız' registered in Turkish Football Federation. Setting out from this information, the artist forms an imaginative team consisting of 203 different Mehmet Yıldız's. In his MASA exhibition, Öğüt is going to exhibit the voice record of the match between the two imaginary teams: “All Stars Team” and “All Stars Collective”

At the invitation of the International Centre of Graphic Arts, which proposed the theme of the main show, this idea was further developed and shaped by Galerija Alkatraz, Galerija Ganes Pratt, Galerija Jakopič, Galerija Kapsula, and Galerija Škuc, which are also serving as venues for the Biennial. Alongside the central exhibition, the 28th Biennial of Graphic Arts includes as well the Artist's Book Salon, the traditional exhibition for the winner of the Grand Prize from the previous Biennial, and a number of accompanying exhibitions.
